CRT Recycling Limited specialises in the treatment, processing and marketing of glass from cathode ray tubes.
For the past four years CRT Recycling has been working in partnership with RTG GmbH which has over ten years experience of processing old cathode ray tubes and of marketing processed glass.
Until recently the conventional approach for treating CRTs was for the panel glass to be separated, from the funnel glass using a variety of technologies. This carries a number of key disadvantages - most notable being high cost, low volumes and poor resulting quality with high reject rates.
The key challenge for Producer Compliance Schemes, however, does not relate to collection or disassembly of TVs and monitors but to achieving market outlets for the glass (without which recycling targets cannot be met or optimised).
Treatment
CRT Recycling Ltd has developed a unique sorting system for processing CRT glass which avoids the requirement to split the cathode ray tube into panel and funnel glass - consequently creating significant cost savings for our suppliers and their customers.
Previously the CRTs, once removed from the television or monitor casing, had to be individually split into their component parts of panel and funnel glass - a process which required careful handling, capital equipment, higher energy and labour usage, and could result in significant rejection rates.
Furthermore the resultant material was of poor quality and regularly failed to meet the exacting requirements of new CRT manufacturers.
CRT Recycling Ltd, through its new WEEE compliant development in the UK, is now able to accept broken CRTs at a price which makes CRT splitting both obsolete and uncompetitive.
Transport
By being able to accept broken CRTs we can save both suppliers and Producer Compliance Schemes significant sums. There are a number of areas where savings can result for TV and monitor disassemblers:
- Much easier handling at the disassembler’s site
- Quicker throuighput
- NO capital equipment requirement
- Mixed glass can be stored in broken form in 35cy yds or bulk tippers
- More compact loads require less transport
All suppliers need to do is to ensure that the vehicle and storage conditions meet the standards of our Cleaning Certificate.
Processing
Once the broken CRTs are received they enter a system which has been developed as part of an industrial production process to prepare a vital raw material for CRT manufacturers - not a waste treatment process. Through a series of unique processes, protected by IPR, the glass is cleaned, separated from metal, ceramics and other contaminants and then divided between funnel and panel glass, with the panel glass being further separated into the various transmission qualities required by our customers.
Marketing
CRT Recycling Ltd is a global supplier of high quality glass supplied, as a raw material, to CRT manufacturers around the world. Using processed CRT glass as an input material in place of virgin raw materials, is very attractive to CRT manufacturers giving them significant savings in energy, CO2 emissions, and other raw materials’ costs.
